High Priority Projects

Have you ever heard of the FSF's High Priority Free Software Projects list? If not, check it out here.

It's a great place to start because the projects listed there represent areas where non-free software has a strong hold on the market or where free software could be better. If you're an adventurous user, you can find projects that need help testing, bug reporting, and writing documentation. If you're a developer, you can find projects that need help confirming bugs, fixing bugs and developing new features.

So what kinds of projects are high priority? Currently on the list are: a free player for Flash called Gnash, a 100% free operating system called gNewSense, video editing software like KDENLive or Blender and a free Skype replacement such as Ekiga. There is also a project to provide a free BIOS called Coreboot, software to support the RARv3 archive format and drivers to run network routers. Visit the list to read more about these projects and others.

Do you think something's missing from the list? Did you try out a project and think it just needs more exposure? Start a thread on our new forum or email us at podcast@trygnulinux.com. Just knowing about the High Priority list can help you have an impact no matter what your level of expertise.
